Front Range Consulting & Riedel Communications PEG Access Benchmarking Study December 2009 | Thanks to all those who have shown interest in the PEG Benchmarking Study! We will be contacting you again once the list is complete. | | Overview PEG access operations are or could be facing increased scrutiny of their operations and staffing levels. While this increased scrutiny is expected in difficult economic times, PEG access operations need to be armed with reliable and unbiased information on how they compare to other PEG access operations across the country. For that reason, Riedel Communications, Inc. and Front Range Consulting, Inc. have teamed up to create a "benchmarking study" that will give PEG access managers and boards much needed information. We anticipate that some of the participants will not be offering all three of the public, educational and governmental access operations, therefore we plan on making the survey results divisible for each of the PEG operations separately. Please see the Alliance for Community Media supporting statement below.
| | Process Riedel Communications, Inc. and Front Range Consulting, Inc. ("Consultants") will offer and prepare this subscription based benchmarking study. Bunnie Riedel is well known in the PEG access community as the former Executive Director for the Alliance for Community Media and her independent consulting with PEG operations across the country. Dick Treich of Front Range has been involved with financial and benchmarking studies for 30 years and has been an active member of NATOA and supportive of community interest since 2002. The results of the benchmarking study will be made available by subscription only. Each PEG access operation will be asked to independently complete a detailed online survey whereby information on the individual PEG operations would be gathered. By using each participant to complete the survey, the Consultants will be able to keep the subscription costs low. The Consultants will take this data and identify averages and trends in the operations data including programming metrics, organizational structure and salary ranges for stratified organizations groupings by annual budget and number of cable subscribers. We anticipate that the areas surveyed will include the following general categories (and more): (1) salaries, (2) staffing levels, (3) hours of original programming, (4) technical operations, and (5) facilities and equipment. Benchmarking Report Each subscribing operation will be issued a final copyrighted report with detailed benchmarking metrics. Each subscribing operation will have the option to purchase an additional report whereby its own data submitted will be compared to the applicable budget and subscriber count grouping that will give further insight as to how the organization compares to its peers. While the Benchmarking Report will become a public document after it is released, the Consultants will not release any specific data gathered from any of the supporting organizations in order to assure participants that their individual data will not become public information. Assuming we begin this project later this year, we anticipate having the final report done by the end of the first quarter or early second quarter 2010.
| | Subscription Fees The Consultants propose the following subscription fees by annual budget groups: Annual Budget | Benchmarking Report | Optional Comparison Report | Small (under $100,000) | $375.00 | $250.00 | Medium ($100,001 to $200,000) | $750.00 | $500.00 | Large ($200,001 to $500,000) | $1,500.00 | $1,000.00 | Very Large (over $500,000) | $3,000.00 | $2,000.00 | If you have any questions about the subscriptions, please feel free to contact us. We are attempting to see if sufficient interest exists to undertake this project. We would like to have at least 100 PEG operations. Without obligation, could you please us know if you would be in a position to recommend/authorize participation in this study by letting either Bunnie info@riedelcommunications.com or Dick dick@frc-inc.com know by email.
We would like your feedback on your participation by: December 15, 2009 Assuming we achieve sufficient participation, we anticipate preparing subscription contracts shortly after December 15th. "The Alliance for Community Media agrees that this study will provide its members with substantial benefits with each participant being able to evaluate their operations in comparison with similarly sized PEG operations. Additionally the Consultants will allow ACM to use the summary results in their national lobby efforts on Capitol Hill during the pendency of legislative activities regarding PEG operations and other related lobbying efforts." Benefits of Participation We see many benefits from this benchmarking survey that will significantly aid the PEG managers and boards in identifying performance measurements which until now have only been available on an "ad-hoc" basis. | Thank you in advance for your input and feedback on this study! Please feel free to forward this email to anyone you think might be interested. Bunnie Riedel Richard Treich Riedel Communications Front Range Consulting | | | |
